An Important Message to ATM and Debit Card Holders
Recently banks across the state have become aware of an increased number of unauthorized ATM and debit card transactions. Many of these have occurred out of state and out of the country. Additionally, a local retailer has just reported a breach of its computer systems, putting credit card information at risk. Our goal, quite simply, is to minimize your exposure to risk. To protect your account, we monitor your ATM and Debit card transactions for potentially fraudulent activity. We encourage you to do the same. Online and mobile banking make monitoring your account activity very easy. You can even set up alerts to notify you of activity on your accounts. If you have not signed up for online banking, we urge you to do so in order to monitor your own accounts. If you identify any fraudulent transactions, please contact us immediately. Remember, you do not have any liability for unauthorized transactions confirmed as part of a breach, provided that the transactions are reported within the required timeframe. These other simple steps will help protect you:
- When using your debit card for a purchase, you should use the PIN. A signature based purchase involves more risk.
- In stores and at ATMs, always cover your card and PIN.
- Watch for cell phone cameras, mirrors or other tools used to view cards and PINs.
- Be careful about allowing cashiers to take your card out of sight.
- When out-of-state, use your debit card for PIN-based transactions whenever possible. Signature-based transactions may be restricted in some cases.
If we suspect fraudulent ATM or debit card use, we will be calling you to validate the legitimacy of your transactions. Your participation in responding to our call is critical to prevent potential risk. Whenever possible, someone from the bank will call you personally; however, there may be times when our call is an automated call which will ask you to verify recent transaction activity. You will be provided with a toll-free number to call should you have additional questions.
Again, please monitor your account activity and follow the tips to protect your information. Call us immediately if you suspect any fraud. Call Bath Savings at 1-800-447-4559 during business hours and 1-888-849-6046 when the bank is closed.
